Good employment practices and the AVB

Written by Zeker voor Bouw | March 19, 2026, 1:55:31 PM

As a business owner in the maintenance or painting industry, your main priorities are delivering quality work, ensuring a safe work environment, and planning for the future. However, there are situations you can’t always prevent. That’s exactly where good employment practices come into play. It’s not about rules or obligations, but about taking care of your employees and minimizing risks for your business.

In this article, I’d like to explain what good employment practices mean in relation to your general liability insurance (GLI) and why they protect you as a business owner. And of course, I’d be happy to discuss this with you if you’d like to bounce some ideas off me.

What does “good employment practices” mean under the law?

Section 7:611 of the Dutch Civil Code states that, as an employer, you must ensure that your employees have adequate insurance coverage in the event that they suffer harm due to an unexpected incident while at work or commuting. That may sound like a heavy responsibility, but in practice it mainly means that you won’t leave your employees out in the cold if something goes wrong.

How is this covered under the general liability insurance policy of OnderhoudNL Verzekeringen?

Our general liability insurance coverage for OnderhoudNL members includes comprehensive coverage for good employment practices as standard. This gives you peace of mind and security.

The following services, among others, are covered as standard:

  • painting

  • glass installation

  • plastering

  • wallpapering

  • Interior painting and coating work

  • wood rot repairs

  • burn off paint

  • working at heights (up to approximately 10 meters) using scaffolding or aerial work platforms

  • restoration painting (sometimes subject to an additional charge)

The compensation packages are also generous:

  • €2,500,000 per claim / €5,000,000 per insurance year

  • Standard coverage included

  • Work involving fire hazards is also covered

  • Coverage for good employment practices

  • Pre-existing conditions are covered under the general liability insurance policy

  • Deductible: €500 per incident

And if no other insurance policy is in effect (such as Passenger Accident Insurance (SVI) or Workers’ Accident Insurance (WSV)), this clause provides additional protection for your employees.

Why is this relevant to you as an entrepreneur?

Good employment practices contribute to:

  • a safe working environment

  • fewer (financial) risks in the event of an incident

  • satisfied (insured) employees

  • a stronger position as an employer

In short: you demonstrate that you take responsibility. And that pays off, both in terms of your employees’ trust and business continuity.
