The weather forecasts are good for the coming days. There is a good chance that you will visit the beach. However, on such a wonderful beach day, you may encounter some unpleasant surprises. Keep a close eye on your beach bag, but also check your insurance policies before you take your place on the beach.
Contents insurance
During a busy day at the beach, anything can happen to your belongings. For example, while you are enjoying yourself on your lounger or towel, your belongings may be stolen. Property insurance with out-of-home coverage ensures that you are covered for this. Incidentally, this also applies to many items that would also be covered under home contents. Examples include your smartphone, laptop, tablet, money, cards and sunglasses. Out-of-home coverage doesn't just apply to the beach. As the name suggests, it applies anywhere outside your home. But there are some exceptions:
- Suppose you go into the sea for a cooling dip and as a result you leave your belongings unattended. And at that very moment, something is stolen from you. Then your insurer will probably see this as negligence. After all, you did not do everything possible to prevent the theft of your belongings. So the damage suffered in this case will not be compensated.
- With many insurers, contents insurance does not cover the full damage or loss of mobile electronics. Therefore, always consult the policy conditions or contact your insurer.
- Are you going to a beach or lake outside the Netherlands? If so, your outdoor coverage may not be valid. So always check this before you leave.
Health insurance
An accident is in a small corner, even on the beach. If you are lying on the beach, a Frisbee hits you on the head. On your way to the sea for a swim, you stumble because you overlook a pit. If you are just relaxing, you get stung by a jellyfish or wasp. A medical setback during your visit to the beach can just happen to you. In that case it is good to know that medical assistance is generally covered by your basic health insurance. However, you may have to pay your deductible.
On the other hand, you yourself can reduce the risk of medical complaints from the sun. Greasing well with quality sunscreen is an important and simple preventive measure. And always check for shade. Finally, we recommend that you always keep drinking enough. This does include watching out for alcohol, as it can lead to dehydration.
