As an entrepreneur in the fuel and energy station sector, you face specific risks: fire hazard, environmental damage, traffic movements on your premises, and employees who work with technology and customers on a daily basis. However, there are no insurance policies in the Netherlands that are exclusively required by law for fuel or energy stations. There are, however, a number of insurance policies that are either required by law or prove to be indispensable in practice.
Legally required: you must have this in place.
Do you have company cars, tankers, or other vehicles registered in your company's name? Then you are legally obliged to insure them with third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles. This covers damage caused to others by the vehicle. In addition, as an employer, you are required to have basic health insurance for yourself and to pay social security and employee insurance premiums for your employees. This is not a choice, but a fixed prerequisite for good employment practices.
Not mandatory, but logical
A business liability insurance is not legally required, but is strongly recommended for gas stations and energy stations. Customers, suppliers, and employees visit your premises every day. An accident, environmental damage, or damage to third-party property can have major financial consequences. In some cases, financiers or clients even explicitly require this insurance.
Also a fire and building insurance is crucial. Especially if you own the property and a financier is involved, this insurance is often a strict requirement. Given the nature of your business and the increased fire risk, this is not an unnecessary luxury. One point of attention is the increasing stock of, for example, tobacco products.
Do you work with cash? Then you need cash-in-transit and robbery insurance is worth considering. This covers damage caused by theft or robbery and can often be part of a broader insurance package. This also applies to transport that is outsourced to Brinks, for example. Let me check your agreement.
Looking beyond what is 'mandatory'
Although there is no specific mandatory tank or energy station insurance, there are insurance solutions that fit in with the daily practice of your company. Think of absenteeism insurance for continued payment of wages and guidance in case of illness, WGA shortfall and WIA excess insurance to protect employees against loss of income in the event of incapacity for work, a suitable pension plan or group health insurance that meets the needs of your team.
In summary
Third-party liability insurance for motor vehicles and social insurance for you and your employees are legally required. Liability, fire, and absenteeism insurance are just as important for the continuity of your business. Not because you have to, but because the risks are simply too great.
