Sick leave insurance is not required by law, but the costs in the event of an employee falling ill can be significant, as you are required to continue paying wages for up to two years.

 

If you have sick leave insurance, the insurer will cover these costs for you. The sick leave insurance is tailored to the applicable collective bargaining agreement for your sector.

As an employer, under most collective bargaining agreements, you have a duty to continue paying the wages of a sick employee for up to two years. Exactly how much that is varies by collective bargaining agreement, but it often involves a large portion of the salary (for example, 70 to 100 percent in the first year and sometimes a lower percentage in the second year).

In addition, there will be additional costs:

• Replacement: you often have to hire someone temporarily and pay those costs as well.
• Reintegration: counseling and administration around long-term illness costs time and sometimes money (e.g., for external counseling).
• Employer charges: on top of the gross salary, you pay an average of 20 to 35 percent extra in premiums and other charges.

The premium for sick leave insurance is determined based on your own choices and your company's sick leave over the past two years. In addition, you can choose from the following components: Own risk period: you choose after how many (waiting) days you want to receive benefits if your employee is sick. Illness during the waiting period is for your own account. Frequently chosen by members: 2 or 4 weeks.

 

Employer's expenses: in addition to the wages of (sick) employees, you have other additional costs. You choose whether you want to include the employer expenses in your insurance (up to a maximum of 25%).
