Reduce the cost of sick leave
As an employer, you are required to continue paying your sick employee's wages for up to two years. These costs can be considerable. As soon as your chef or hostess falls ill, it will quickly cost you around € 228 per day*:
Continued payment of wages € 110, -
Replacement costs € 90, -
Employer's expenses € 28, -

With sick leave insurance, you can insure the costs of continued payment of wages and the insurer will pay these costs to you for up to two years.

Do I need sick leave insurance for my hospitality business?
Sick leave insurance is not required by law. The costs in the event of a sick employee can be very high, because you are obliged to continue paying wages for up to two years.
If you have sick leave insurance, the insurer will pay these costs for you. The KHN sick leave insurance is in line with the hospitality industry collective bargaining agreement.
What does a sick employee cost in the hospitality industry?
You may face the following direct and indirect costs:
- You continue to pay your sick employee's wages for up to two years. According to the hospitality industry collective bargaining agreement, wage continuation is 95 percent in the first year and 75 percent in the second year.
- You have to arrange replacements and pay a temporary worker's salary as well.
- Reintegration counseling for a long-term sick employee takes a lot of time, which you could otherwise have spent on your hospitality business.
- Per employee, on top of the monthly gross salary, you also pay about 20 to 35 percent of that salary in additional costs. These costs are called employer charges.
What does sick leave insurance for the hospitality industry cost?
The premium for sick leave insurance is determined based on your own choices and sick leave over the past two years in your hospitality business. In addition, you can choose from the following components:
- Own risk period: you choose after how many (waiting) days you want to receive benefits if your employee is sick. Illness during the waiting period is for your own account. Frequently chosen by KHN members: 2 or 4 weeks.
- Employer's expenses: in addition to the wages of (sick) employees, you have other additional costs. You choose whether you want to include the employer expenses in your insurance (up to a maximum of 25%).
