The holidays are a time of lights, festivity, and decorations. However, in apartment complexes, festive decorations and extra electrical appliances can also increase the risk of fire. As a homeowners' association board and resident, you can prevent a lot of trouble by taking a few simple measures.

1. Be careful with electrical decorations

Only use lighting with a CE mark and preferably LED lights (less heat generation). Avoid a tangle of extension cords—overloading can lead to overheating. Always unroll cable reels completely when in use.

2. Chimney and stoves

Are there any fireplaces or wood-burning stoves in the complex?

Have your chimney swept by a professional at least once a year.

Only use suitable fuel and avoid wet wood.

3. Safe cooking during the holidays

Always stay close to the stove when cooking.

Is your pan catching fire? Never extinguish it with water—put a lid or fire blanket on it.

Turn off the extractor hood when flambéing to prevent fire in the extraction system.

4. Clothes dryers and other appliances

Clean dryer filters regularly.

Only use the dryer when you are at home.

Connect devices directly to a grounded outlet, not through extension cords.

5. Keep escape routes clear

Do not place Christmas trees, boxes, or decorations in hallways and stairwells.

Ensure that emergency doors can be easily opened from the inside.

Check that the main gas, water, and electricity shut-off valves are accessible.
